A configuration item can be a physical, logical, or conceptual component such as hardware, software, network devices, systems, applications, documentation, or services.
Each CI is uniquely identified, documented, and tracked within a configuration management system to maintain integrity, traceability, and control.
Changes to configuration items must be assessed, approved, implemented, and recorded through the organisation’s change management process.
CIs enable effective impact analysis, incident resolution, auditability, and compliance.
